Alleged Rolling Meth Lab Closes Local Ohio Interstate For Hours

BLUE ASH, Ohio -- A routine traffic stop led to the discovery of a rolling methamphetamine lab late Wednesday, Ohio police said.

Frank Purcell Jr., 31, of Verona, Ky., was stopped at about 11 p.m. for a routine traffic violation on southbound Interstate 71 near Pfeiffer Road, WLWT Eyewitness News 5 reported.

The officer who stopped Purcell allegedly found drugs in his car, and a closer look revealed the chemicals used to make methamphetamine, Blue Ash Ohio police said.

The discovery led Ohio police to close the interstate for about four hours because the chemicals used to make the drug can be explosive, WLWT reported.

Ohio police had to wait for a Columbus-based hazardous materials team from the Drug Enforcement Agency to come clean up the scene before they could reopen the highway.

Lt. Dennis Boone of the Blue Ash Ohio police Department said rolling meth labs can become dangerous very easily.

"It's a chemical process and it takes some time to cook, and you can be cooking as you are driving down the road," Boone said. "Is it the smartest thing to do? No. But if they were all geniuses, I'd be out of work."

Purcell was charged with manufacturing methamphetamine and possession of chemicals used in the manufacturing of methamphetamine. He was arraigned Friday morning and is being held on $50,500 bond, according to WLWT.
